CAT 2009 to be Computer Based ! What to Expect ?

The Common Admission Test (CAT) of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Shillong is going to be a Computer Based Test (CBT) from this year onwards. The test will be conducted in a window of about ten days sometime at the end of the calendar year, 2009.

People have a lot of apprehensions on what to expect in CAT 2009 ? Will it be difficult ? How easy or tough it will be to take the Computer Based Test ? These are the questions, our users and most of the aspirants have been asking. And since IIMs have not released any guidelines as to what will be the pattern etc, no one actually knows whats in store.

We posted an article : How to prepare for CAT 2009 ? on 4th Feb 2009. And since then we got 320 visits to this article. Amazing, considering that we have very few means of advertisement (read mini-gorilla) and a very limited (though steadily growing) user base.

Reasons are many, first because of recession, we have seen an increased number of people visiting MBA and related sites for information related to part-time/full time MBA courses and more information about preparations.

Should I join a coaching institute for CAT 2009?

Though CAT 2009 is still 8-9 months away, people have started preparing for it. "Should I join a coaching institute ?", "Which institute should I join ?" , these are the questions most people are asking.

We asked a few students who cleared CAT in previous years, and got a mixed opinion. Kapil Bohra, IIMC 2008-2010 Batch says "Coaching institute does greatly helps in improving upon speed and also gets one regular in studies". While Rakesh Nag, IIMA 2008-2010 Batch when asked "Is coaching institute a must for CAT preparation?", replied "Not really. I did attend a one year training program. While it did help marginally, the one thing I really found useful was the large number of mock CATs that was part of the program".

So it is not clear as to whether a coaching institute is must for CAT preparation. Everyone has a different opinion on this. If you ask us, the answer is "it depends !". Latest GD/PI Topic : Should Pub Culture be banned ?

We live in a globalized world, where we come across a mix of race, culture, religion, and nationalities. And hence over time many cultures have mixed with ours, and saying something is foreign and banning it is not possible. Globalization started centuries ahead, with trading of spices,tea,coffee etc, and it cannot be reversed. Also count the contribution by liquor sales and pubs/bars to the government. This cannot be ignored as well.

Recently Italian authorities have decided to ban a few food outlets that serve foreign food, like Kababs etc. Reason sited by them is eating foreign food takes the "Italianness" away.I wont be surprised if something like this happens in India as well.Food and Drinks should not be considered as citizens. It is almost impossible to segregate food or food habits based on nationalities. For example tea and coffee, which are now consumed world wide. Tea originated from China, and Coffee from Ethiopia.Even the tomato that is a must-have ingredient in Italian-pizza is believed to have come from Mexico. The spices from India have traveled a thousand countries and their flavor mixed with a millions others. So it would be ridiculous to tie some country with a particular food.I think the same argument applies to the recent hue and cry on "pub culture". I dont understand how this pub culture harms any individual or a society. Assault of women in public is more horrific and anti-indian I believe. Even the union health minister has come out with statements on anti pub culture, on grounds that it is against indian culture. Does he think the western-style suits he dresses in are indian ?There is no end to the list of things we do or use in our daily life that is multi-cultured. Our politicians and parties should concentrate more on real issues like naxalites, terro rism, poverty etc.

FMS 2009 Analysis

FMS 2009 Analysis : FMS 2009 had total 175 questions.The section wise split was - Quantitative Aptitude: 49, Analytical and Logical Reasoning: 49, RC: 35 and English Usage: 42. The paper this year was lengthier and much difficult as compared to last year's paper. The paper also had a number of errors especially in the quantitative section.

XAT 2009 Test Analysis

XAT 2009 comprised of 3 sections, and a total of 104 questions. The section wise split was - Verbal and Logical Ability (VA and LR) : 35, DI and Quants : 38, Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making : 31. The XAT 2009 can be termed as medium to high in terms of difficulty level. The DI and Quants section was the most difficult of them, as per feedback from most XAT takers.

Mensuration Practice question for CAT 2009

Ground work for CAT 2009 is on. Here is one simple problem.
A cone of radius r and height 3r is cut from a solid cylinder of same radius and height. A hollow hemi-sphere of diameter r is dropped into the hollow created by removing the cone in such a way that the hollow part of the sphere is facing the base of the cone. As the results of most of the MBA entrance exams are nearing, the GD/PI fever is taking its toll. So here is a nice read on essentials of Gd/PI

Group Discussion is an important criteria of the selection process in admission in IIMs and other MBA Institutes. The Judging Panel typically looks out for candidates who are outgoing and smart. During the GD, the panel members essentially evaluate the candidate's potential to be a leader and his/her ability to work as a team member. It is not a very easy task to stand out from a group of ten to twenty candidates. You are being assessed for your team behavior. You cannot win by either being a mute witness to the action or by being very aggressive. While doing the right things can allow you to become a valuable member of the group, doing the wrong things can cause you to disrupt the discussion, and you may find yourself alienated from the other members.

Regionalism has remained perhaps the most potent force in Indian politics.
It has remained the main basis of many regional political parties which have been governing many states since the late 1960s.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which ruled at the central level from 1999 to 2004, was but a medley of various region-based parties

Argument in favour: Regional parties encourages an identity on basis of language,culture,tribes and fuels a sense of regional deprivation among the people.
